An affluent man and his young wife—played by Gig Young and Carol Lynley—travel to a New England island that was once the wife’s childhood home. They encounter hostility from local toughs and discover that her now-decayed estate is believed to be haunted or cursed. Despite warnings from the residents, they choose to remain. Chaos follows. "The Shuttered Room," also known as "Blood Island" (1967), combines drama, mystery, and horror elements, drawing on a story by August Derleth and H. P. Lovecraft. I first saw this film when I was younger, and certain moments have stuck with me—like the group of young men riding gravel boards and one being impaled on barbed wire, an elderly woman eerily rocking in a tower, and unsettling camera angles showing an unseen presence spying from within an old mill. Other things that stood out were the impressive Crested Serpent Eagle and the unusual jazz soundtrack. Oliver Reed is excellent as the leader of the roughnecks, perhaps because he was known to be a brawler in real life. He possesses a captivating quality reminiscent of Brando, but with a more menacing edge. Carol Lynley (who also appeared in 1972's "The Poseidon Adventure") was 24 during filming and is stunningly beautiful. It’s odd that her character, Susannah, is married to Gig Young’s character given his age—he was in his early fifties at the time—but it happens. Besides, he didn’t seem particularly old and appeared capable of handling himself. The story unfolds on an island off the coast of New England, but filming took place in Kent and Hardingham, England. While these are beautiful locations, it's obvious that they aren't a New England island. Why not simply set the film in England? Some viewers have expressed disappointment with the revelation of the unseen presence at the end, but I found it effective; it was unexpected and felt grounded in reality. Life can be unsettling beyond what fantasy might suggest. That’s all I will say to avoid giving anything away. Even though some contemporary audiences may find it slow-paced, "The Shuttered Room" resonated with me because of its eerie atmosphere, the compelling performances from talented actors, and a few scenes that left a lasting impression. It's a mystery/horror film not for being excessively frightening or graphic, but rather for its unsettling nature and understated creepiness. The movie has a running time of 1 hour, 38 minutes. GRADE: B+/A-
