Despite his characteristic cool demeanor, precise filmmaking style, and dark humor, _The Shrouds_ reveals a deeply emotional side to David Cronenberg, and even though he’s downplayed the personal aspects of the story, it feels like his most intimate work yet. Following his wife's death in 2017 after an extended illness, Vincent Cassel’s character, Karsh, seems to represent Cronenberg himself—a way for the director to convey his experiences with loss, grief, and sexual longing, as well as grappling with the concepts of transience and mortality. Karsh is a man involved in the funeral industry, troubled by visions of his deceased wife during sleep and by her twin sister (both portrayed by Diane Kruger) while he’s awake. As a plot involving threats to Karsh's growing business unfolds, Cronenberg examines themes that have long been important to him: how technology interacts with our bodies, what will become of human relationships, the state of the natural world, and, powerfully, the decay, objectification, corruption, and vulnerability of the physical body. Cronenberg, who has stated that novels are a bigger influence on his work than films, handles the story in _The Shrouds_ with a deliberate, intricate, and literary style, concluding on an emotionally resonant note instead of one based on a need for plot resolution or suspense. We don’t receive simple explanations regarding the conspiracy; rather, we're left with the unsettling understanding that Karsh will forever be affected by his wife's passing, and that every future relationship he pursues will carry this weight and share in her suffering.
