This rum is red, man! Even though Stephen King has expressed dissatisfaction with Stanley Kubrick's film version of his book, The Shining (1980) has become a success both with critics and audiences. It might not align with what King envisioned, but it’s certainly a well-crafted movie—a combination of striking visuals and dread, utilizing impressive methods alongside straightforward yet impactful moments of fear. It also features strong performances from the actors involved. The plot progresses at an unhurried speed; a sense of being trapped seems to emanate from nearly every shot, while the storytelling incorporates both human and supernatural elements that are effectively unsettling thanks to the expansive—and frigid winter—surroundings of the Overlook Hotel. It isn’t flawless; the script itself is fairly unremarkable, which actually highlights how remarkable Kubrick's direction is, but this does bring up the concern that it prioritizes aesthetics over depth. A petty complaint? Perhaps. Nevertheless, with Jack Nicholson delivering an exaggerated performance and Kubrick in control, The Shining remains a standout within the horror genre. It’s a film every fan of horror should experience at least once—and ideally in the highest quality format possible! 8/10
