This Beef and Lamb Hot Pot is certainly something special. George Marshall directed The Sheepman, with a screenplay by William Bowers, James Edward Grant, and William Roberts. It features Glenn Ford, Shirley MacLaine, Leslie Nielsen, Mickey Shaughnessy, Edgar Buchanan, Willis Bouchey, Pernell Roberts, and Slim Pickens. Jeff Alexander composed the music, and Robert J. Bronner was in charge of cinematography. The Sheepman is a charming, partly humorous Western that introduces us to Jason Sweet, played by Ford, who arrives in Powder Valley – a town controlled by cattle ranchers – and immediately creates conflict by declaring he plans to graze his sheep on their land. Naturally, complications and personal histories emerge! Aside from some noticeably flawed rear projection effects, the film is crafted with both flair and wit. The beginning is particularly strong, as Sweet quickly establishes himself in town with a knowing look and a powerful punch. Ford’s portrayal of the character is captivating; he skillfully combines humor and strength, immediately drawing viewers into his corner and setting the stage for what follows. The supporting actors are excellent, bringing depth to the characters—the screenplay even earned an Oscar nomination—and the writing demonstrates cleverness with its plot developments and dedication to keeping things engaging and avoiding sentimentality. This is a film that any admirer of Glenn Ford should definitely watch. It earns a solid 8/10.
