A successful financier, Andy Dufresne, portrayed by Tim Robbins, receives a life sentence after his wife and her lover are discovered dead. The story unfolds over more than ten years, showcasing both the most savage elements of imprisonment and moments of optimism. Director Frank Darabont draws exceptional performances from Robbins, Freeman, and others; Clancy Brown contributes a particularly unpleasant presence as the guard captain, while James Whitmore brings compassion as the prison librarian, one of the few to achieve parole. The final third of the film is among the most memorable in cinematic history, and experiencing this adaptation of Stephen King's comparatively obscure but well-regarded novella on a large screen is highly recommended; it provides a sense of resolution that surprises even those within the correctional system.
