Walter Huston portrays Sir Guy Charteris, a British businessman looking to acquire Mother Gin Sling’s thriving establishment. The casino owner has no desire to give in to his ambitions and decides to retaliate. To do so, she brings in Dr. Omar—who doesn't seem quite right for the part—to ensure that Charteris’ daughter, Poppy, experiences the effects of opium. Things become more tangled when it turns out there’s a past connection between the wealthy man and the casino proprietor, leading to a scheme intended to get even with him. The movie feels reminiscent of an earlier "Charlie Chan" series, though lacking the charm of Warner Oland or Sydney Toler. The plot developments are quite foreseeable, and there's excessive conversation as the story drags on for ninety minutes before arriving at a rather disappointing, overly dramatic finish. Although she isn’t prominently featured, Ona Munson dominates whenever she is onscreen; otherwise, it feels like standard afternoon television programming.
