I’ve seen shark movies before – ‘Jaws’, ‘Deep Blue Sea,’ you know the drill – and this one fits right in with that bunch. It seemed well-made, at least for a good portion of the time. The visuals were convincing, so I initially figured it might be among the better ones out there. Ultimately, though, I felt let down by how the shark was depicted. Its behavior felt realistic until roughly the last thirty minutes, when it devolved into a predictable movie trope where the creature is single-mindedly focused on eliminating its prey. I’m an animal enthusiast, and while I haven't personally encountered a live shark, I consider myself fairly knowledgeable about them thanks to nature documentaries. What appeared in this film was disheartening for someone who appreciates wildlife. I’m not taking sides here; I’m simply commenting on the shark’s actions. They weren’t accurate, but aside from that, I did enjoy the movie. Honestly, excluding those final few minutes when the shark became overly aggressive, it felt like a top-tier shark attack film and I had no complaints. However, the climactic confrontation diminished my overall impression and what I believed the film was capable of achieving. The setting was excellent, and Blake Lively gave an outstanding performance. She was captivating at first, but once the story shifted to surfing and then the shark attack, things changed considerably. The movie maintained a tense atmosphere throughout, and I thought the script was quite well-crafted. It had a small cast, and most of the action unfolded very near the shoreline. It started strong, kept up momentum in the middle section, but finished poorly; that’s my assessment of it. It almost reached the level of a truly great film like ‘127 Hours.’ You could even say it's a nautical version of that movie. Nevertheless, I do recommend it because it is worthwhile viewing. _6.5/10_
