"The Shadows Edge" features Jackie Chan, the actor widely considered number one among moviegoers in Hong Kong, and falls into the genre of action thriller familiar to audiences there. While enjoyable, this film doesn't quite reach greatness. The story involves a retired police officer—Chan’s character—being called back to work when contemporary methods prove ineffective against an elderly criminal who is skilled at avoiding detection and has assembled a team of young cyber thieves. The movie delivers plenty of action sequences showcasing Chan’s signature inventive style, incorporating the surroundings and ordinary objects into his martial arts moves. These moments are complemented by intense gun battles and impressive explosions, creating what's generally a fun time at the movies. However, one significant drawback is that the film feels too lengthy. This occasionally makes it hard to keep track of the plot, and some characters seem either underdeveloped or receive less attention than they deserve. Ultimately, this is a reasonably good action thriller with a recognizable Hong Kong feel. It would have been improved by a more concise script and a shorter running time; even so, it’s still worth seeing.
