This film isn't a continuation of “The Sacketts,” though it brings back five performers and the writing team behind that earlier two-part series. Apparently, stars like Selleck, Elliott, and Osterhage expressed a desire to collaborate on another Western project, which led them to contact Louis L’Amour, resulting in this movie. The story unfolds shortly after Lee's surrender to Grant. It’s a decent Western film, which is fairly predictable given the experienced people involved. There are echoes of John Wayne’s “The Undefeated” from thirteen years prior, but it stands apart because of scenes set on the coast; those moments evoke thoughts of "One-Eyed Jacks." However, some noticeable errors detract from the experience, likely due to limitations in the television production budget. For instance, Katharine Ross's character gives Jesse a contemporary lock blade knife while they’re on the beach. The soundtrack also feels out of place with its lighthearted banjo music and excessive smiling, which doesn't quite match the serious stakes involved. Still, perhaps after surviving the Civil War, this adventure seems less significant in comparison. Natalie May appears as Heather, a young woman who is among those facing enslavement in Mexico. She previously had a notable role in “Parasite,” released earlier that year. The movie has a runtime of approximately one hour and thirty-two minutes and was filmed in the Jamestown/Sonora area—about two hours southeast of Sacramento in north-central California. The scenes set in Baffin Bay, Texas, were actually shot in Santa Cruz, which is nearly three hours southwest of Jamestown. GRADE: B-
