Even though I don’t subscribe to any religious beliefs, I ended up seeing this film. And honestly, I almost immediately felt like I'd squandered my time. But not completely, and let me explain why. Just so we are clear: I haven’t read the book; anything I say is about the movie alone. Please don't bring up the novel—this isn't a review of it. From an artistic standpoint, this film feels rather empty for someone who doesn’t share those beliefs. The central message seems to be: "You have to forgive, whatever occurs. There is a divine plan for everyone. You must simply believe." And my initial and final question, "Why?" went unanswered. Perhaps some viewers will find this comforting—a way to keep going and live without remorse for what they’ve done or experienced, regardless of how terrible those events were. But I can't accept that perspective. I won’t believe that our lives are predetermined by a higher power, and we lack the ability to alter them. I refuse to accept that we don't make choices and aren't accountable for what we do. This idea takes away our freedom because someone else has already made those decisions for us. It is so simple to attribute events to "God’s mysterious plan," and unfortunately, a lot of people choose this explanation. However, I will say that the movie did give me insight into how religion functions in the world—how religious organizations try to take advantage of people's vulnerabilities. Thank you for that. If you already share my views and won’t find anything new here, I suggest skipping this film.
