Ann Todd portrays Francesca, a celebrated concert pianist receiving psychiatric care from Herbert Lom’s Dr. Larsen following an attempt on her own life. The story explores the reasons behind her distress by looking back at her history, beginning with when she goes to live with her reserved, affluent, and emotionally unavailable cousin, Nicholas, played by James Mason. This sets her on a solitary course toward achievement. It's only through a romantic involvement with Max (Albert Lievin) that she begins to face her anxieties—and Mason himself—in an effort to escape his influence. The film benefits from beautiful classical music accompanying Francesca’s performances in European concert halls, and the acting is generally impressive; Mason conveys a subtle but palpable sense of threat, while Lom demonstrates a dedicated desire to assist his patient as the narrative progresses toward its resolution. I felt Todd was the least convincing element. Her performance didn't quite match the caliber of her fellow actors, appearing somewhat rigid and uninspired; however, considered as an entire production, it is successful.
