Richard, played by Tom Ewell, is a married man left home alone while his family is away, with only his writing project and some questionable beverages for company. His wife, Helen, calls every night at 10pm, requiring him to stay awake, and during those waiting hours, his imagination runs wild. Things get even more intense when his new upstairs neighbor, Marilyn Monroe, stops by. He’s immediately captivated; she seems to embody everything he wants, and as they become friends, his daydreams escalate into increasingly elaborate and unfulfilled scenarios. The story that follows would have been stronger if Ewell's performance had been better—he doesn't quite manage to carry the weight of it, and we spend too much time waiting for Monroe’s appearance to inject some life into the proceedings. She enters at precisely the right moments, perfectly portraying a desirable figure who playfully pushes the hapless Richard toward the edge. The script itself is reasonably funny, although it relies on slapstick humor a bit too often, and I felt that one gag went on just a little too long, becoming somewhat tiresome after about an hour of slightly repetitive situations. It’s not among Billy Wilder's finest works, even though a scene involving a subway train created a memorable moment in film history. You could see it as a playful take on "Beauty and the Beast," but ultimately, it feels rather mild.
