_The Selfish Giant_ offers an engaging viewing experience—it's rough around the edges, emotionally resonant, and visually striking, featuring strong performances from the younger actors. A sense of genuineness permeates the film, and the central friendship is genuinely touching in a very downbeat, realistic style. However, despite my desire to connect with it on a deeper level, there was something about the presentation that felt calculated. It seemed to deliberately target certain emotions. The depiction of suffering occasionally veered into feeling exploitative rather than compassionate. I appreciated the skill involved in its creation, but ultimately I felt drained more than uplifted. It's recommended, though not particularly transformative.
