It’s a film that comes as a genuine surprise. It might even be among my favorites because I can’t recall the last time I felt so moved. I'm not embarrassed to admit I enjoy sentimental stories; this one wasn't an all-out tearjerker, but it does elicit strong emotions eventually. I had been hoping for something like this for a long time, which is why I appreciated it more than I initially thought I would. This Irish-English production features a remarkable cast. Their performances were enough to make me watch it, especially considering it wasn’t heavily promoted like Hollywood films and isn't part of the mainstream cinema conversation, so many people are unaware of its existence. Rooney Mara delivers one of her finest portrayals; while the other actors all have significant roles, none quite match her impact. Certain genres translate well between books and film, but not always. This is a rare instance where both formats succeed admirably. Watching this movie feels almost like reading the book itself—a work that explores characters and events in depth with emotional resonance. It’s enhanced by beautiful locations and a fitting musical score. The suspense kept me engaged throughout. The final revelation wasn't particularly difficult to anticipate, but it likely won't be obvious to everyone. Set in the first half of the 20th century, the story alternates between earlier events and later ones. The film reveals an elderly woman residing in a mental asylum who is refusing to leave as she’s being relocated; her reasons for resisting are explained during her final days there. > -xX] There's a sickness in people that stops them seeing the truth. [Xx- A doctor brought in to review her case must piece together her story and take appropriate action, accompanied by a nurse. She recounts a youthful romance that led to the town turning against her, particularly a young priest. The film details how she ended up in the mental hospital and why, after 40 years, she’s now unwilling to depart. The narrative concludes on an emotional note. The movie evokes elements of 'The Little Prince' and 'Neverwas,' seamlessly blending reality with fantasy, all told from an adult perspective. It suggests that what is shown doesn’t necessarily have to be believed; everything culminates in the final twist, revealing its true nature. It’s hard not to wonder if it’s inspired by someone’s real experiences, as such fates were sadly common for women in earlier eras. That's what makes it so heartbreaking. The title is perfectly suited to the story being told. The older version of the main character delivers a superb performance. While the romantic portion is brief, the mystery lingers until the very end. What’s narrated and what isn't are handled with great care. It was a truly satisfying film that I am glad to have seen. I don’t know if everyone will enjoy it as much as I did, but it’s certainly worth checking out. Given that the story is told from a woman’s perspective about her struggles in a male-dominated world, women might connect with it more than others, especially given the current rise of female empowerment and the push for equality.
