The gorgeous scenery of Monument Valley provides a striking visual setting for what truly feels like a grand movie experience. John Wayne takes the lead in this celebrated tale concerning a man whose family suffers violence at the hands of Comanches, and his quest afterward to find them and exact retribution. Jeffery Hunter portrays his nephew "Martin," delivering a performance filled with feeling and talent, while Ward Bond also contributes to the strength of Frank Nugent's writing. The praise that has come later for Wayne and John Ford is certainly justified. Wayne manages to bring tenderness and sensitivity into his characteristic tough persona, and Ford guides this adventure film with an attention to the story’s unique human qualities. Western films are largely a thing of the past now, but the very best continue to be counted among cinema's finest – and this one definitely belongs in that category.
