Leslie Howard embodies the ideal of selfless generosity in Alexander Korda’s pleasing version of Baroness Orczy's story about the violent consequences following the French Revolution. He is wed to Merle Oberon, a captivating actress whom he suspects abandoned the "St. Cyr" family to face execution, and together with his loyal followers, they bravely free nobles from the clutches of the villainous "Chauvelin," played by Raymond Massey. The group finds themselves in an increasingly precarious situation, balancing liberty and peril as "Chauvelin" is dispatched to London to hunt down the "Scarlet Pimpernel," using deception to manipulate Oberon into turning against their courageous efforts. While Howard occasionally overplays the flamboyant nature of his character—his frequent use of phrases like “sink me”—Harold Young directs a remarkably suspenseful film, featuring strong performances from Massey, who is particularly chilling, and the rest of the ensemble, including Nigel Bruce. This, in my view, stands as the finest cinematic rendering of this novel.
