Matthew Rhys delivers a performance as he assumes the role of his own double in this thriller that starts with promise but doesn't quite manage to sustain itself. The film unfolds in the UK around the time of Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation. "Standing" is an educator who has a wild night out drinking with "Spence," a look-alike he encounters by chance. When he wakes up the next morning, nursing a hangover, he discovers that “Spence” has disappeared, taking his identity along with him. Soon, he's been pulled into living as this other man—a prosperous individual with a family and some hidden secrets. Was this all part of a plan? Is someone manipulating him? To find out, "Standing" must fully embrace his new life, hoping to uncover the truth before anyone realizes something is amiss. I’m not sure what you think, but if my partner came home one night and he was an exact copy of me, I'd like to believe I could still recognize him. What also makes the plot feel a bit hard to swallow is how easily he manages to pretend to be someone about whom he knows absolutely nothing. While I appreciate quick thinking, this stretches believability too far, and as it went on, I really began to lose interest. The film has a polished appearance and features a strong cast including Dame Eileen Atkins, Phoebe Nicholls, and Anton Lesser, who is generally dependable, but the narrative quickly spirals into implausibility after roughly thirty minutes, leaving me mostly unengaged.
