This entertaining Western from the late sixties features Burt Lancaster, Ossie Davis, and Telly Savalas. The film centers on a tough trapper (Lancaster) who is compelled by Kiowas to exchange his prized furs for an educated escaped slave (Davis). To retrieve those furs, they pursue the Native Americans, subsequently encountering a group of scalphunters headed by a loud, bald man (Savalas). Shelley Winters also appears in the film. A distinctive characteristic of “The Scalphunters” (1968), apart from its cast, is that the narrative unfolds entirely within the Southwest’s desolate landscape; there are no towns, structures, or teepees to be seen. However, the cinematography showcasing the locations is quite beautiful. Although it contains some amusing moments, viewers shouldn't anticipate anything as over-the-top as “Blazing Saddles” (1974). Instead, it aligns more with Westerns of that era like "Bandoleros" (1968), "The War Wagon" (1967), and “The Undefeated” (1969). It isn’t quite as strong as the first film mentioned or as enjoyable as the second, but its quality is roughly equivalent to the third. The movie has a running time of 1 hour and 42 minutes and was filmed in Arizona (Quartzsite, Parker & Harquahala Mountains) and Mexico (Barranca del Cobre, Chihuahua, Durango & Sierra de Organos).
