It's an acceptable Danish take on the spaghetti western genre, and doesn’t surpass that description. A younger Clint Eastwood could have easily filled the lead role; instead, Mads Mikkelsen delivers what I would describe as a perfectly adequate performance. I did find it somewhat peculiar when the characters spoke in Danish initially. It gave the film a certain something, at least for me, although those unfamiliar with the language might not feel the same way. The plot is essentially a traditional revenge narrative centered on a conflict between heroes and villains. This is an old-fashioned Western that avoids convoluted storylines or attempts to portray historical accuracy or incorporate social commentary; it’s clearly intended as entertainment for fans of classic spaghetti westerns. I appreciate that someone still wants to make these kinds of films, and was able to secure the necessary funding. I enjoyed both Mads Mikkelsen and Eva Green – despite her character being silent – and Jeffery Dean Morgan in his villainous role. However, the film doesn’t quite reach the level of a truly great spaghetti western. It fails to establish that dark mood surrounding the protagonist as he begins his quest for vengeance, and the final confrontation felt underwhelming. Despite this, it's still a respectable movie that should satisfy most enthusiasts of traditional Westerns. I believe it is definitely worth adding to my collection.
