I’m giving this one a 3.0 rating. I’m a big fan of Ti West; House of the Devil was fantastic, and Innkeepers remains among my favorite horror films in recent years. The fact that it references the Jonestown massacre adds to its unsettling nature, and the brief length is actually an asset. Gene Jones delivers a great performance. However, there are quite a few missteps throughout. I can only think of the Vice connection as justification for the music choices—they create soundtracks for their documentary shorts, as far as I know—and it makes the found-footage aspect feel artificial. It might just be me, but I really dislike almost every instance of that “Be careful out there boys: you wouldn't wanna walk into the wrong place...” horror dialogue. You can tell that everything here comes from a sincere effort; Ti West clearly puts thought and care into his work (though it’s never been more evident than in Innkeepers), but this likely would have benefited from additional development time. It struck me that this is his first film produced by Eli Roth, and I imagined them meeting up a few months before filming, getting intoxicated in Eli's apartment and brainstorming the concept. Nevertheless, it’s still superior to most horror movies being made.
