Corbin Bernsen’s performance was genuinely impressive; he certainly earned praise for it. He managed to be unsettling, which was surprising given his previous roles. Seeing him succeed in this type of part proved quite enjoyable. Despite that, the film didn't reach its full potential. It could have been really good if released during the 1970s or the 1980s. The fact that it’s a production from the 2010s meant it lost focus on any meaningful storyline and devolved into pointless brutality. Thirty or forty years ago, the violent scenes would have felt more purposeful; they might have been stark, but they'd have enhanced the narrative. Eventually, the violence ceased to advance the plot and instead existed solely for gore and shock value, which wasn’t what I was anticipating. I went in hoping for a suspenseful movie, but it shifted into something resembling *Saw*, and any sense of tension disappeared.
