The film demonstrates competence in its execution, but feels empty. This adaptation doesn’t possess the substance or emotional depth that distinguished the 1987 original. It comes across as considerably less convincing than that intentionally over-the-top movie from the eighties. The earlier film offered characters you could connect with, significant scenes, and a narrative that held your attention; this one feels flat, introduces only a single character who is developed even minimally, and his progression isn’t particularly noteworthy. There's an overwhelming feeling that events are unfolding in a predictable way, and the conclusion simply reinforces that impression, while the 1987 film leaves you with more to consider. It's not poorly made, but it misses something essential, and being merely enjoyable doesn’t elevate it to greatness.
