Peter McGinn on The Royal Nanny

1/10 · Dec 23, 2022

I chose to watch just three new Hallmark holiday movies this year, and The Royal Nanny turned out to be the strongest of that selection. It arrived at the familiar place expected in a Hallmark Christmas story, but managed to do so with considerably less cloying sentimentality than the other two films I saw—enough to protect the blood sugar levels of people like my wife. It had the typical romantic and comedic moments, but avoided pushing “this is what Christmas means” messages as awkwardly as those other movies did. There were also spy thriller aspects present, mainly the recurring question of who could be trusted. The film clearly takes inspiration from Mary Poppins, with nods like the nickname "Scary Poppins" and the challenging kids, though it doesn't rely on that too much, just a few quick references. Greta Scacchi was particularly memorable as the nanny trainer, but generally everyone performed well, aside from perhaps a couple of villains who seemed to be acting a bit too dramatically. It proved to be an enjoyable movie and I’m happy I saved it for last out of the three Hallmark films.
