Two Canadian women, Hanna (Julia Garner) and Liv (Jessica Henwick), plan to earn some money working at a bar in the Australian outback to help pay for their travels. Upon arrival, they find the Royal Hotel is far from luxurious; it's managed by the grumpy Billy (Hugo Weaving), his patient friend Carol (Ursula Yovich), and frequented mostly by boisterous men who enjoy Dickens cider. The women initially feel overwhelmed, but can they manage to stand up to increasingly uncomfortable advances? Daniel Henshall’s unsettling Dolly emerges as a primary source of conflict, though the subtly manipulative Matty (Toby Wallace) and their inebriated employer also present challenges. I wasn't entirely sure what to anticipate from this film. The combination of aggressive masculinity and readily available alcohol certainly generates an unpleasant atmosphere for the women, but the narrative seems to stall toward a disappointing ending. There’s nothing particularly fresh or inventive here; it relies on familiar portrayals of rural Australia and ultimately loses momentum. It seemed like there was promise, but director Kitty Green appeared unsure how to bring things to a close, resulting in something forgettable and rather underwhelming. Garner and Henwick deliver acceptable performances, but that's the most positive thing I can say about this average film, unfortunately.
