It's easy to spot when performers are having fun on set, and both Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch seem to have relished the chance to unleash this story. He works as an architect, while she’s exploring a career in cooking, and they first encounter each other in her kitchen. A small taste of raw trout – perhaps that's a veiled reference – leads quickly to marriage and a move to California. They become parents to two children, and he has recently completed plans for a striking new maritime museum. However, his success is short-lived when an opening night storm forces this couple to re-evaluate their roles. Suddenly, “Ivy” isn’t just baking bread; she's also the primary earner. When a food critic raves about her seaside restaurant, "Theo" finds himself relegated to domestic duties and childcare while his wife works long hours and brings in the money. That income, as it turns out, allows him to design and construct his dream house – featuring an antique Spanish table, Irish roof moss, and even a computer named “Hal.” Eventually, they come to realize that something isn’t quite right with the "Rose" family, and when their children receive an early scholarship, she recognizes how much of their childhood she has missed, while he acknowledges his own lost years. Will they be able to resolve these issues, or will events unfolding in their seaside home mirror those from 15th-century England? Fortunately for viewers, it’s the latter, leading to scheming, gossip, and a militaristic use of crabs, oranges, and hardened skin as this couple escalates their arguments into a new level of amusing conflict. Several other characters appear intermittently; “Jeffrey” (Ncuti Gatwa) is apparently skilled at confronting truck drivers, but his friend "Barry" (Andy Samberg) can’t compete with “Eleanor” (Allison Janney) in legal matters, and their marriage counselor seems more in need of assistance than capable of providing it. The script mocks any trace of sentimental sweetness while equipping the main characters with sharp retorts to playfully attack each other and elicit laughter. I'm not sure this is a film that will endure or even one I’d choose to rewatch—but it provides ninety-odd minutes of entertaining, lighthearted entertainment, and I did find myself enjoying it.
