Richard Burton, playing Gallio, heads a large-scale production with vibrant costumes and scenery, centering on a Roman officer who finds himself at odds with an exaggerated portrayal of Caligula by Jay Robinson during a slave sale. As a consequence, he and the slave Demetrius, portrayed by Victor Mature, are sent to Judea. There, under orders from Pontius Pilate, he’s tasked with overseeing the crucifixion of Christ, an event that leads him to discover a famous robe, after which his inner self begins to unravel. Jean Simmons portrays the woman who loves him and attempts to maintain his stability as he seeks to recover the article of clothing, but her efforts prove futile as he descends further into turmoil. The film feels excessively slow-moving, heavy, and ultimately disappointing. Alfred Newman’s musical score is intrusive, and the writing itself is dense and uninspired. It seems Henry Koster could have easily trimmed approximately twenty minutes from the runtime, which might have made it engaging enough to hold my attention. Unfortunately, that didn't happen.
