As Europe moves closer to conflict, the narrative centers around Kirsty, portrayed by Hermione Corfield, who has fallen for Murdo, played by Will Fletcher, a somewhat studious young man. Murdo departs for war completely oblivious to the terrible secret his beloved now holds—a secret that will profoundly impact her life, as well as the lives of her mother (Morven Christie) and sister (Ali Fumiko Whitney). Difficulties seem to accumulate for this young woman, arriving in waves, and the overwhelming misfortune she faces pushes her toward extreme actions.
