A student, Thomas Gibson, is discovered dead from freezing in the river near Haddan School, an elite preparatory institution in the Northeast. With a desire to sidestep unfavorable publicity, school officials rush to classify the death as a suicide. However, Police Officer Abel Grey, portrayed by Edward Burns, isn't convinced and begins to suspect that a fraternity hazing ritual may have gone terribly wrong. Rachelle Lefevre takes on the role of a friend of the deceased student, while Jamie Thomas King appears as someone competing with him for her affection. Jennifer Ehle portrays an instructor at the school who also draws Abel’s interest during his investigation. "The River King," released in 2005, is a drama and mystery that borrows from the atmosphere of “Dead Poets Society” (1989), but updates it to contemporary times, incorporating aspects found in subsequent movies like “Snow Angels” (2007), “Coming Through the Rye” (2015) and “The Drowning” (2016). Those who enjoy films with similar themes will likely find something to appreciate here. While not quite reaching the heights of "Dead Poets" or "Snow Angels," it comes reasonably close. Burns bears a striking resemblance to Ben Affleck, making him an effective lead character, and Ehle evokes memories of a younger Meryl Streep. Lefevre is consistently captivating throughout the film. The winter scenery – the school itself, the surrounding woodlands, and the nearby town – stands out as a particularly strong element. The narrative feels grounded and detailed without becoming overly complicated. A romantic relationship unfolds in a way that seems entirely believable. Everything works well together, including the final reveal and its connection to Abel’s past traumas and present struggles. The movie has a running time of 1 hour and 39 minutes and was filmed in Nova Scotia, Canada (specifically Halifax & Windsor). GRADE: B+/B
