"The RIP" evokes earlier police crime thrillers from the eighties and nineties, though it ends up feeling more like a copy than something truly original. It’s probably fair to say that one of the biggest issues with this kind of movie is that it's become its own tired collection of tropes: hard-drinking, foul-mouthed, rough-looking cops who drive fast cars and are sharper than they initially seem. "The RIP" really plays into these familiar elements, leading to fairly obvious plot developments. Around the midpoint, I had already figured out what was happening and why—and it's not because I’m particularly bright; I’ve simply encountered this setup before. Still, the movie includes a late reveal intended, I suppose, to surprise viewers. The actors are recognizable, but their performances don't bring much substance to what is merely a passably entertaining action mystery. Ultimately, Hollywood needs fresh ideas—you can’t rely on constant repetition and expect it to continue paying off. It’s an acceptable film, but doesn’t manage to set itself apart in any meaningful way.
