_The Revenant_ stands out as an exceptionally well-crafted film from a technical perspective; however, one significant flaw proved quite disruptive. The automated dialogue replacement—specifically, the dubbing of the Native American characters—is remarkably poor, reminiscent of something from the 1970s and consistently noticeable. While this might be a slight problem in most movies, it's particularly distracting here because the film excels in nearly every other audiovisual aspect and presents itself with such solemnity. I repeatedly caught myself unconsciously supporting the opposing characters—initially the bear, then Hardy—and felt compelled to correct my own reaction. The positive side of this is that all the characters are portrayed as relatable and imperfect, which I appreciate; conversely, it lessened my connection to Leo’s character, who dominates the screen time, so I wasn't fully invested for a good portion of the movie. The second and third acts didn't quite live up to expectations in this regard. They weren’t bad by any means, but they felt noticeably less impactful than the opening act. It seemed as though the story was extended beyond its natural length after that point. Despite these issues, I knew early on—within about 90 seconds—that I would recommend _The Revenant_. The visuals possess an otherworldly quality; it feels intensely authentic, so much so that it seems almost artificial. The world depicted in _The Revenant_ is strikingly realistic, possessing a strange and contradictory nature that resonated with me immediately. For the casual movie viewer, this film is certainly worth seeing, but for serious cinephiles or film students, it’s practically essential viewing. 75%
