A story of someone returning from what seemed like death to seek retribution. The film draws inspiration from an actual event taking place in 1823 within the United States. It centers on a hunter who is left behind after suffering severe injuries during a bear attack and desperately tries to make his way back to camp, primarily to get revenge for the loss of someone he cared about. The narrative largely revolves around surviving in the wilderness while attempting to stay away from Native Americans. However, the initial setup felt rushed, as did the final chase sequence. It proved to be an entertaining film geared toward adults, although it does contain some graphic imagery. The production values were substantial; the script was solid, the direction competent, and the acting, music, and locations all contributed positively. Still, it would have been even better had it remained more faithful to what really happened. I found it to be a bit too polished for cinematic purposes. There was considerable excitement surrounding Leonardo DiCaprio’s performance, with many seemingly eager to see him win an Oscar, though I've witnessed stronger performances from him previously. The film’s running time presented an issue; trimming at least fifteen minutes would have improved it. The visuals were impressive, and the computer-generated bear appeared remarkably realistic. Despite this, there are moments where the storytelling feels detached from reality. It could have been a truly excellent semi-documentary otherwise. So, temper your expectations if you aren’t already a fan, but enjoy it as a moviegoer like myself. It's generally considered to be quite popular, but I would describe it simply as good – not a classic. 7/10
