Even though the premise involves morally questionable actions taken to survive and earn money, this isn’t a standout film from celebrated filmmakers or writers. It’s essentially a straightforward road drama loosely inspired by true events, but it possesses a surprising strength that depends entirely on the viewer's perspective. The title provides key information; the story unfolds in 1864 and centers around a young Black man who joins forces with another individual to assist bounty hunters in pursuing their quarry. The narrative focuses intensely on one particular mission: recovering a person from a distant location, and detailing how they plan to accomplish it. It shares some visual similarities with 'Slow West' due to the characters’ journey, but ultimately feels distinct and engaging. I wasn’t familiar with any of the actors, but I appreciated their portrayals. The young actor was particularly strong; while an award might be unlikely, acknowledging his performance seems appropriate. Films on this scale often go unnoticed outside of critical circles at film festivals. Having seen it, I'm happy that I did. It surpasses many comparable movies in quality. A realistic depiction stands out as a key element. Set during the Civil War and amidst widespread loss of life, this small-scale adventure involving three people is presented more effectively than expected. Being Black in America at that time was incredibly challenging, and the film accurately conveys the atmosphere and hardships of that era. The story initially unfolds like a conventional bounty hunting narrative before gradually easing into a slower pace, building towards an emotional climax. It doesn't feel fabricated; it’s a small treasure to be discovered. While I think a slightly deeper emotional connection would have been welcome, overall I am content and suggest it for those seeking a worthwhile B movie experience. 6.5/10
