The museum curator, “Cuthbert,” played by Linda Hunt, is constantly searching for ways to get money for the institution. A significant fundraising event involving the mayor and other important people is her main focus, but that plan could be derailed because police lieutenant "D'Agosta" (Tom Sizemore) is investigating some strange deaths where the victims’ hypothalami have been stolen. Simultaneously, scientist “Margo” (Penelope Ann Miller) is examining a large beetle she killed—she’d finally found a useful purpose for her massive chemistry textbook—and discovers it has hybrid DNA from an insect and a reptile. She joins forces with the detective, and soon they're in the museum basement as chaos erupts, leaving "Cuthbert" to watch her elegant party devolve into something much more dangerous (and wet!). The plot feels familiar, drawing on well-worn tropes, and features a less than impressive cast struggling with a story that’s been told many times before. The visual effects near the end offer a slight boost, but not enough to prevent it from failing across most aspects of its production. Hunt contributes little beyond occasional shrugs and sharp comments, and Sizemore doesn't manage to elevate the sluggish and uninspired plot he’s given. It resembles an installment of "Stargate," only stretched out considerably.
