The film brought to mind those live-action movies Disney released back in the sixties and seventies. A major star, Steve McQueen, befriends a young boy, Mitch Vogel, and together with his mischievous companion Rupert Crosse—who goes by “Ned”—they take off in his grandfather’s bright yellow Lincoln, seeking some excitement. Initially, their destination is Memphis, where "Boon" (McQueen) intends to visit his girlfriend, Sharon Farrell, who works somewhere not appropriate for an eleven-year-old boy! While they're occupied with that, “Ned” suggests swapping the car—remembering that roads weren’t common and mud was everywhere—for a horse. When "Boon" learns about this plan, he realizes he needs to retrieve the vehicle before returning home, and chaos ensues. Throughout it all, the quiet and well-mannered “Lucius” (Vogel) is gradually exposed to new experiences! It seems there’s only one way to recover the car: by winning the local derby. Neither "Boon" nor "Ned" have much understanding of horses, but “Lucius” isn't clueless about them and also happens to be lighter in weight. Maybe he can secure a victory and get the car back? The reason anyone would want such an eye-catching yellow vehicle in that area is hard to say, but it quickly becomes covered in mud! This is a mild story of growing up, not just for the boy, but also his older friend, filled with silly situations highlighting the star’s appeal and the production's creative design as it progresses over a somewhat lengthy two hours. It isn't particularly groundbreaking, certainly, but everyone involved appears to be enjoying themselves (with the possible exception of the goldfish in the house of ill repute), and the combination of playful antics with a touch of moral instruction makes it worthwhile viewing.
