Juliet Doherty plays Sam, who is on the verge of her debut solo performance at the Harlow ballet theater when tragedy strikes: her sister, also a dancer, dies after being hit by a car. This event understandably leaves Sam adrift and listless; she spends time with a friend named Eve (Lauren Esposito) and gets involved in minor offenses. Her parents, struggling to cope, find her a job cleaning at the ballet school. What follows is largely conventional, though the film shows some spark when actual dancing appears, particularly during scenes featuring her dance partner 'Ben' (Joel Burke). The classical music accompanying the dances sounds impressive through cinema sound systems, and the visuals of the routines are quite striking in their style. However, there isn’t nearly enough dancing, and any nods to the original "Red Shoes" narrative feel faint and barely connected. Mostly, this is a slow-moving dramatic story with an ensemble cast whose performances aren't particularly memorable, presenting a somewhat vague family dynamic. It’s the second movie I’ve watched in a theater by myself recently – and while it wasn't terrible, it did prompt me to question why it warranted a theatrical release.
