"The Reaping," which came out in 2007, centers on a former missionary turned professor who travels the globe disproving supposed miracles (played by Hilary Swank). Along with her assistant (Idris Elba), she finds herself investigating a bayou community where events mirroring the ten plagues of Exodus are occurring (!). David Morrissey portrays their host within the town, while AnnaSophia Robb takes on the role of the 12-year-old at the heart of these strange occurrences. The question becomes: are these events genuine or can they be attributed to scientific explanations? If they're real, what is their origin—divine intervention or something else? This film operates as a suspenseful mystery horror, setting it apart from typical monster or slasher films; those seeking the latter should look elsewhere. Despite this, the production values are remarkably high. The depictions of the plagues are impressive, especially scenes like the bayou transforming into blood, swarms of locusts, and fire falling from the sky. Hilary Swank is visually striking, reminiscent of Raquel Welch (neither appeals to my personal taste, but their undeniable allure is apparent). Idris Elba provides a pleasant presence as her colleague, and David Morrissey establishes an unsettling demeanor right away. As for AnnaSophia Robb, even at 12 years old it’s obvious she was destined to become quite attractive. The film's weaknesses lie in its storytelling and script. The initial portion is engaging and intriguing for roughly the first 45 minutes, but the following 30 minutes feel noticeably slow. A plot twist later on initially disappointed me when I first saw the movie, though a second viewing allowed me to accept it with more readiness. The conclusion, while somewhat over-the-top, is visually striking in the style of "Raiders of the Lost Ark." Overall, this is a decent mystery/horror film; however, it could have been stronger if they addressed issues within the screenplay, such as the sluggish middle section and an unpleasant plot development. The movie has a runtime of 99 minutes and was filmed in several locations including St. Francisville, Louisiana (the bayou town), Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Shreveport & New Orleans, Louisiana, San Juan, Puerto Rico (for the opening sequence), and Austin, Texas.
