It’s exceptionally difficult to capture the depth of W. Somerset Maugham’s explorations of personality in film form—even with a running time exceeding two and a half hours. Nevertheless, Edmund Goulding brought together a talented group of actors for this adaptation, presenting a layered collection of stories revolving around the dynamic between "Larry" (Tyrone Power) and "Isabel" (Gene Tierney). Restless by nature, he abandoned his engagement to travel the world. Following the Wall Street Crash, she is taken in by her uncle, “Elliott” (Clifton Webb), who is concerned with climbing the social ladder, and ten years after Larry’s departure, they are reunited. She then finds herself intensely drawn to him despite being married to "Gray" (John Payne), a man whose name seems quite fitting; it's at this point that Tierney truly shines. She skillfully, and occasionally without kindness, manipulates situations, displaying a resolute desire to achieve her goals with little consideration for her husband’s emotions. Power also delivers a solid performance as an honest, decent individual. Anne Baxter is commendable as "Sophie," whose life spirals downward into tragedy; Webb provides another noteworthy portrayal, and Herbert Marshall contributes a restrained narration while playing the author himself—the overall acting quality is impressive. However, the screenplay feels somewhat unfocused, and the production as a whole seems to be missing something essential. Perhaps it's passion or that initial spark? I can’t quite pinpoint it, but ultimately the film fails to truly ignite.
