The promotional material suggested a trip to Canada, and so our traveler (Buster Keaton) begins his journey by swimming across the Thames – quite the start! He arrives in seemingly perfect condition and then takes over a railway truck, setting off on a fast-paced cross-country adventure accompanied by music that blends Ry Cooder’s style with some upbeat harmonica. The trip covers roughly 3,500 miles, and we see glimpses of various landscapes as he pauses briefly for the necessary maintenance – namely, oiling the wheels after coming to an abrupt stop. This is a visit Canada production, and Keaton fully embraces his solo expedition, eating, cleaning up, and sleeping comfortably in his little wagon. He has a map with him, though its purpose remains unclear since the tracks only lead in one direction. There are some familiar comedic bits as he continues along, but surprisingly, I didn't feel inspired to book my own trip afterward. While vast prairies and forests are initially appealing, they become monotonous after a while. Fortunately, the Rockies eventually appear, and now with a camera, he captures images of the impressive engineering that allows the tracks to navigate the cold environment. Naturally, he’s also equipped with a fur coat and some knitting to keep himself occupied. Perhaps everyone should try it? It's never mentioned whether he thought about how he would return. The concept is inventive and entertaining for around fifteen minutes, but after that, it starts to lose its momentum. Still, it’s worth seeing.
