There was real promise here; it felt like it could have been something special as a dark comedy. However, much like with many Western productions, the film’s vitality seems to have been drained by what they were trying to say. The intended message is pushed heavily to the forefront, completely stifling any chance of authentic black humor. It's disappointing, especially considering that the novel it adapts is quite good and a talented group of actors was assembled for this project. Sadly, enjoyment takes a back seat to delivering a lecture, resulting in something lifeless. Ultimately, no level of strong performances can compensate for this constant need to incorporate overtly political messaging into movies and television shows. It’s like experiencing an odd imitation of the USSR, where entertainment invariably carries a political agenda. I couldn't recommend it.
