This film from Hammer Films, titled The Quiet Ones, draws inspiration from the Philip Experiment that occurred in Toronto in 1972. It centers around paranormal investigators attempting to demonstrate that supposed supernatural occurrences are actually products of the human psyche. Unlike Hammer’s very popular The Woman in Black, this one takes place in the 1970s, specifically Oxford, England. While the house used for filming is isolated, it doesn't quite possess the gloomy atmosphere needed to create a truly unsettling feeling. It seems those responsible prioritized sudden shocks and loud noises over sustained suspense, which unfortunately becomes wearing around the middle of the movie. There are moments when it’s genuinely creepy, with some well-executed atmospheric scenes; Olivia Cooke, who plays a key figure in the events unfolding, gives a solid performance, but ultimately the film feels unoriginal and doesn't quite live up to what it suggests. It earns a 6 out of 10.
