Sharon Stone leads the way in this Western film centered around a dueling competition happening in an isolated desert town somewhere in the Southwest. The settlement is under the control of outlaw Herod, portrayed by Gene Hackman. A preacher who prefers peace is compelled to join the contest by Herod, and he’s anything but your typical religious figure—Russell Crowe takes on this role. Also appearing are Leonardo DiCaprio, Lance Henriksen, Tobin Bell, Keith David, Gary Sinise, and Pat Hingle. “The Quick and the Dead,” released in 1995, was a co-production with Stone, who also secured DiCaprio’s involvement and even covered his salary—apparently (!). She brought Crowe to America for this project as well, marking his first American film appearance. A humorous anecdote recalls that Stone had difficulty sitting down while wearing her tight leather pants. There's a story about her dismissing a body double because the stand-in was attracting too much attention from the crew (!). Stone later admitted Crowe was the best on-screen kisser she’d ever worked with, but kissing DiCaprio felt more like kissing her own arm (lol). The film evokes the feel of classic Spaghetti Westerns from the 1960s, though it boasts higher production values and is considered an important influence on Tarantino's Westerns such as "Django Unchained" and "The Hateful Eight." While not striving for realism, the actors commit to their roles with enthusiasm. It’s clear they all enjoyed making the movie. The setting feels contained and like something out of a comic book, populated by larger-than-life characters; it isn't overtly comedic or campy, though there are moments of silliness. The title seems to come from 1 Peter 4:5 in the King James Version of the Bible, which discusses Christ’s judgment of “the quick and the dead.” The same phrase is found in the Apostle’s Creed with a similar meaning; here, "quick" refers to someone who is living. The film uses this title to connect both the contemporary understanding and the older definition—highlighting that there are two kinds of gunfighters: those who are fast and still alive, and those who have met their end. The movie has a runtime of 1 hour and 47 minutes and was filmed entirely in Arizona, including at Old Tucson. GRADE: B+
