The film “The Quest” has a flaw common to many similar movies released in the nineteen nineties: it doesn’t develop character relationships enough, and that prevents it from reaching its full potential. Twenty more minutes could have made a significant difference by allowing viewers to become more invested in the characters. A proper training montage is missing, which would have helped establish a bond between Van Damme's character and his instructors. Instead, these individuals appear briefly before a time jump appears on screen. Roger Moore and James Remar both deliver strong performances given their limited appearances; it’s unfortunate that the latter doesn’t get to play a traditional mentor figure. Janet Gunn’s role feels underdeveloped, and the filmmakers don't do anything interesting with her character. The primary antagonist in the tournament feels like an imitation of Tong Po from "Kickboxer." He lacks the same intimidating presence as either Tong Po or Chong Li from “Bloodsport,” and his impact on screen isn't comparable. A positive aspect is the variety of martial arts styles featured in the competition; I would have enjoyed seeing some of those fights extended to better highlight each style’s unique characteristics. A noticeable error occurs when they use slow motion during several fights, but because the footage was shot at a standard frame rate and then slowed down, it comes across as jerky and amateurish. This was a missed chance to do something special. It's disappointing because there's a genuinely good film buried within this one. It’s not a terrible directorial debut by Van Damme either; with stronger writing, he might have shown real promise. (It seems odd that they used the same photograph of Van Damme from “Timecop” for the movie poster…)
