Jane and Travolta deliver decent performances, but The Punisher is undeniably a silly film. I’m usually okay with overlooking some things, but I can’t fathom why a professional assassin wouldn’t ensure their targets are permanently neutralized with a double tap at close range. This crime family quickly establishes itself as among the least intelligent in gangster movies, exposing their families to danger, falling for a poorly constructed deception, and failing to understand how Frank Castle's location was discovered. It’s precisely this sort of overly ambitious project that Hollywood churns out periodically—a revenge plot with a tough-guy hero backed by a soundtrack full of heavy metal. The film strains so intensely to appear edgy that it falls flat in a truly uncomfortable way.
