Let’s go over what happens in this fairly standard horror movie. The story begins with a flashback depicting a terrible murder. Then the narrative jumps to the present day, where a dance/school prom night—the site of the initial killing—is being revived. A handful of misleading suspects are introduced, such as the school's janitor found lurking in the basement and an eccentric older man working at the grocery store. We’re also presented with one pure girl experiencing boyfriend problems, alongside her group of overtly sexual friends. As those friends meet their end, the innocent girl and her new boyfriend attempt to escape from a masked killer. The killer doesn't harm the boyfriend, and a strange local resident ends up seemingly defeating the killer...or at least that’s what it appears. Then the killer mysteriously returns, only to be killed by the virgin character. Finally, the film concludes with the virgin appearing lifeless, then being seized by rising figures from beyond, before it's revealed to have been just a dream or hallucination. That’s essentially “The Prowler.” Even though Tom Savini’s makeup effects are present, this remains such a ridiculous movie that even his impressive display of gore can’t rescue a poorly written story. I knew who the killer was almost immediately after they were introduced, so all I could do was watch the bloodshed unfold. It's not exactly groundbreaking that the killer uses a pitchfork; I suppose carrying one wouldn’t attract as much attention from law enforcement. “The Prowler” is just bad filmmaking that only enjoys a reputation thanks to Savini’s makeup effects. Blood and guts don’t automatically create suspense, and neither does this movie.
