The initial idea feels stretched thin, yet Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds manage to create a surprisingly effective pairing in this silly, formulaic romantic comedy. Margaret, played by a no-nonsense Sandra Bullock, is the editor-in-chief at a publishing house, while Andrew, portrayed by Ryan Reynolds, holds a less prestigious position as her assistant. She’s blindsided when she learns that her work visa won't be renewed and deportation looms. Unfortunately for him, he happens to be nearby when this news breaks, and soon finds himself drawn into her plan to stay in the country. They are engaged and planning a wedding! Instead of abandoning her, he sees an opportunity to boost his own career and proposes a deal. However, the tenacious immigration officer Gilbertson (Denis O’Hare) isn't swayed by their convenient arrangement, so with a complicated questionnaire threatening to land them both in trouble, they travel to Alaska to meet his family. His relatives are generally welcoming—his mother (Mary Steenbergen) and grandmother (Betty White) are thrilled about the potential marriage—but he has a tense relationship with his wealthy father (Craig T. Nelson), leading to a mix of family drama and comical physical humor as events progress. Betty White truly shines, particularly later in the film, but Bullock, at her best, and Reynolds, who is showing more depth than just being easy on the eyes, deliver some genuinely funny lines against a picturesque backdrop. There’s no real sense of danger, but it's an enjoyable and undemanding watch.
