Mel Brooks’ debut movie, THE PRODUCERS, kicks off with what is undoubtedly the most amusing opening credits I've ever encountered – a darkly humorous meeting driven by money between someone who consistently flops on Broadway and an elderly man with significant desires. From there, it only becomes funnier. Zero Mostel delivers an exceptionally energetic performance, dominating every scene without stealing attention from the rest of the cast, whose acting is intentionally exaggerated. It's noteworthy that if not for THE GRADUATE being made around the same time as this film was in development, Dustin Hoffman would have played the naive Nazi playwright. Consequently, he became famous through another project; Kenneth Mars gained a substantial part in his second movie appearance; and Mel got to satirize the Third Reich and receive an Oscar for his screenplay while doing so. Occasionally, things simply fall into place.
