Kamurai on The Princess Diaries

6/10 · Aug 6, 2020

It’s enjoyable enough to revisit and easy to suggest to others. The storyline feels familiar, though I can’t say for certain if the “surprise, you’re royal” element is a well-worn plot device. Creating an entirely new nation for this story seems like a specific variation on that idea. What definitely comes across as a trope is the transformation reminiscent of "She's All That," where an awkward and plain girl undergoes a makeover to become beautiful and desirable. The humor arising from cultural differences between America and “Genovia” is entertaining, and the scenes of a family coming back together are heartwarming, but the typical high school drama—all its different aspects—is excessive and tedious. I realize it's necessary for Mia’s character development to make her relatable, but there must be more effective ways to do that. Cutting those parts would remove too much, so I see why they were included. Even though this movie doesn’t offer anything particularly original, it maintains a consistent level of quality from beginning to end.
