Movies about serial killers keep getting made, some of them good, others not so much. It feels unnecessary to list examples; most people who read this have probably watched at least ten already. This is another one, adapted from Scandinavian material that I'm unfamiliar with but would like to explore and locate. To be honest, I’m hoping the original source material is better than what ended up on screen... The film isn't terrible. Let me be clear about that. The basic idea is promising: murders mirroring famous works of art occurring across Europe, alongside a father desperately trying to find the killer. However, it doesn't feel fresh; it relies on familiar tropes we’ve seen countless times in similar movies and fails to break free from the standard formula to offer something distinctive. A significant problem that diminishes the film arises early: the killer’s identity is revealed too soon, reducing the experience to simply watching how law enforcement pursues them. Jeffrey Dean Morgan delivers a strong and capable performance as the lead, fully invested in his role and conveying the character's inner turmoil effectively. His acting definitely adds value. Despite some criticism, I didn't find Famke Janssen’s work to be particularly poor. She has moments that feel forced, and occasionally overacts, but she generally does a decent job and doesn’t have many opportunities to truly falter. Joachim Krol seems misplaced and disconnected. Naomi Battrick performs well, especially considering her limited experience; she portrays a character requiring charisma and presence. Ruairi O’Connor's performance, frankly, isn't memorable; he fades into the background even when he has prominent scenes. From a technical standpoint, it’s an average film without any outstanding qualities, though it doesn't have major flaws either: the European locations and scenery are visually appealing, complemented by unremarkable cinematography and standard costume design. Some well-executed special effects and a bland musical score combine to create a functional, albeit forgettable, whole.
