Tim Robbins plays “Griffin,” a Hollywood executive whose job involves finding worthwhile stories for his studio—a task at which he excels. However, age seems to be catching up with him, and whispers circulate suggesting his departure is imminent. The arrival of "Levy" (Peter Gallagher), formerly with a rival company, only reinforces this impression. Adding to Griffin's troubles is a persistent stalker, someone he previously rejected professionally who now sends unsettling postcards. His casual relationship with “Bonnie” (Cynthia Stevenson) also contributes to his stress, as he seems largely unconcerned with it. Feeling increasingly pressured and targeted, Griffin decides to uncover the source of his torment while simultaneously setting up his new competitor for a disastrous outcome. The film then unfolds, featuring numerous well-known actors, providing Robbins an opportunity to portray a character who is astute, merciless, and superficially appealing—and willing to resort to extreme actions. These behaviors draw the attention of determined detective “Avery” (Whoopi Goldberg), who’s investigating a death, lacks a suspect, and finds herself intrigued by the developing connection between the deceased's former partner (Greta Scacchi) and this outwardly confident and slick film producer. It has all the components of a comedy thriller—glamour, sharp dialogue, and a satirical yet believable portrayal of Hollywood culture. Robbins thrives in his role, projecting an appealingly selfish arrogance as he navigates the precarious nature of the entertainment industry. The movie manages to fit a great deal into its runtime, eliciting both laughter and surprise, and is likely Robbins’s finest performance so far.
