Similar to most of the Poe adaptations produced during the 1960s—including those made by different directors like “The Oblong Box” (1969)—this film draws inspiration from Edgar Allan Poe’s work rather than being a direct adaptation. Despite this, it proved to be the highest-grossing of the group and Richard Matheson crafted an engaging narrative, particularly given the limited setting. The story is primarily confined within the imposing castle, with only a few scenes depicting the coastline. Contemporary horror films often rely on increasing amounts of gore to startle viewers; however, filmmakers in the 1960s had to emphasize atmosphere, melodrama, and subtle hints of dread alongside occasional shocking moments—though these were generally not overly graphic. This is an atmospheric film suitable for autumn (or any time of year) if you’re seeking dark castles, eerie corridors, frightening rooms, cobwebs, Medieval design, chivalry, scandalous secrets, and the looming possibility of a gruesome end. Both Luana Anders and Barbara Steele were just 22 years old during filming and appeared quite lovely. American International Pictures (AIP) functioned as the American equivalent to Hammer Films in England; therefore, fans of Hammer horror should find this appealing. The film’s length is one hour and twenty minutes, and it was filmed at Raleigh Studios in Hollywood, with the coastal scenes shot in Palos Verdes, approximately 20 miles south along the coast.
